Covering a song is both a challenge and an opportunity. The hardest part is taking something iconic and making it your own, while still respecting the original. For me, that means reimagining songs with an upbeat, danceable twist that brings out the joy in the music.
Take Redemption Song by Bob Marley, for example. While it’s a heartfelt ballad, I’ve turned it into a funky, rhythmic piece that lifts the mood while keeping the song’s powerful message intact. Similarly, I’ve reworked Beatles classics like Help and All You Need Is Love, adding funky grooves that make them fresh and fun to perform.
When I choose a cover, I’m drawn to songs with uplifting or meaningful messages. My goal is to highlight those themes while making the music more energetic and engaging for the audience. It’s not just about playing a song—it’s about bringing new life to it and giving people a reason to move and feel good.
Learning a cover takes time, and I commit to getting every detail right. That includes memorising all the lyrics, which can be one of the toughest parts. But by doing this, I can perform without relying on an iPad or sheet music, allowing me to connect fully with the audience and focus on the music.
For me, each performance is an opportunity to share a message of hope and humanity’s potential. Whether it’s through a cover or an original, I aim to inspire belief in our ability to change the world for the better. That belief in music’s power to connect and uplift is what drives me to perform and create.
